Community Partners: Temple Chai

This is the first in a series of stories about SJN’s Community Partners. These are the individuals and organizations enabling our work.

The Start of a Meaningful Relationship

SJN has hosted its regular meetings and some special events at Temple Chai in North Phoenix since early 2007. Our connection to the temple originated through the efforts of SJN Alum Marcia Finberg, a Temple Chai congregant, who now co-leads the Tempe Career Network.

After meeting at Mountain Valley Church in North Scottsdale for a year, the church could no longer accommodate SJN’s schedule and we began looking for a new home. Because Temple Chai had previously sponsored an employment support program, Marcia thought that they might want to know about SJN’s need for regular meeting space.

Marcia and I met with Sharona Silverman, Director of the Deutsch Family Shalom Center at Temple Chai, on Dec. 26, 2006. We had a warm, friendly conversation, and Sharona was enthusiastic about welcoming SJN to Temple Chai. She viewed the connection as a way to continue the work the temple had offered through its earlier program, Job Transitions and Education for the Changing Workplace. I believed that SJN had found a sponsor who appreciated our mission and was eager to support it. I knew that the collaboration would provide SJN with a haven where our program could thrive.

A Valued Community Partnership

Since that day in December 2006, I have been overwhelmed and touched by how open and easy the Temple Chai community has made it to bring SJN to their campus. Their goodwill and empathy for our cause have enabled our program to prosper. SJN’s earliest meetings, held in the temple’s library, had an average attendance of 30. After two years, we have seen up to 200+ per event, and Temple Chai has adapted, making an adjoining room available.

In addition to SJN’s bi-monthly meetings, we have held workshops like an all-day “Exploring Your Passion and Putting it to Work” where SJN participants could be seen working in pairs in the courtyard. We’ve offered evening events and curriculum workshops, and even a photo shoot. When necessary, we have been able to linger after regular meetings, and the staff has helped with issues around the A/V equipment we own and use there. Other behind-the-scenes gatherings, like SJN planning sessions and volunteer group meetings, have been held at the temple as well.

We are fortunate to work with Temple Chai’s supportive staff including Sheana Abrams, facilities coordinator, who reserves space for our events; Jose Sanchez, maintenance worker, who sets up the double room to meet our requirements; and Marci Beliak, assistant to Sharona Silverman, a valuable resource and contact to others at the temple. Joe Miller joined the temple staff as Executive Director about a year ago and has been a pleasure to know. He has gone out of his way to ensure that SJN has access to double space to accommodate our growing numbers.

The Cost of Operating

The temple has donated meeting space to SJN for three years. In 2009, thanks to member and meeting sponsor donations, we were able to reimburse the temple for some operational expenses.

SJN is grateful to Temple Chai and our friends in the Jewish community for their passionate support of our members and neighbors in career transition. God bless your work as well!

There are three SJN meetings left on the December calendar. Be sure to see our website for programs scheduled and register for:

Members, guests, recruiters, employers and first timers are always welcome to attend meetings at any location.

At the Dec 15 meeting in the North, during the 8:30-9:30 AM open networking hour, we are having a light breakfast to celebrate the holidays. Consider wearing your holiday ties and gay apparel. Donations given in the past will cover the food expenses. Donations are always welcome.

If we don’t see you at one of the next three meetings, thank you for your participation this year.

Volunteer of the Week: Aidan Foley

Aidan Foley has been a key volunteer contributor to the post-launch and continued success of SJN Southeast.

Aidan originally joined SJN in November 2006, then landed at Orbital Sciences and moved to alumni status, and returned to SJN as an active job seeker in June 2009.

For those of you who attended an SJN Southeast event over the summer, when Eric Walton was our presenter, you know that Eric assigned “homework” to-dos for everyone to work on in preparation for the next meeting. The first to-do, from the “Emotions” session, was to journal where you were with each of the 10 emotions listed on the Emotional Roller Coaster.

In the earliest SJN Southeast meetings, we had quite a few new members joining us at each meeting, and I would remind everyone before the next session what the homework to-do was, so that first-timers would be prepared.

My introduction to Aidan was his email response to me, the day after receiving this reminder, as follows:

“Hi Dawn, concerning the action item, I did a self assessment (my wife helped too), and I've only seen Denial that my last employer could let me go with so much on my plate, Apprehension in that have I done everything possible to prep for my interview, Accepting that this 'stuff' happens, and Growth that I'm able to offer comfort and humor to others going thru this transition as well as me....”

Since our SJN Southeast group was still very new, and everyone was still getting to know each other, Eric and I asked Aidan at that second meeting if he would mind sharing his response with the group, and he immediately agreed. He was an icebreaker for the other SJN members, and encouraged them to also share their situations.

Before the next meeting, Aidan offered to be an SJN volunteer. When I asked him what he would like to do, he replied that he would do whatever we needed help with, that he typically never got to pick and choose his assignments, and that it seemed that he always got the ones that were in distress and needed a “smokejumper” mentality to solve.

Aidan offered to coordinate with Jerry Holtzclaw and Meridith Sullivan, and he led the creation and roll-out of the Specialty Support Groups (SSGs) in SJN Southeast in early August, and has been the SSG coordinator since then for SJN Southeast.

He also recognized the importance of re-offering the Get Wired to Get Hired workshop and LinkedIn demo at SJN Southeast, and since he was very familiar with LinkedIn, offered to be involved in the hands-on LinkedIn demo presentation that we provided in November.

Aidan was also a Wandering Greeter at all events, and made a point of making sure that no one was sitting alone at a table from the time that they arrived – including Laurie Katapski, the SJN North Site Event Coordinator, who I had invited to sit in and observe an SJN Southeast event!

Beyond that, I could tell that Aidan was always thinking about SJN and its needs as he was going through his daily and weekly job search and networking:

He would advise as he identified several potential locations for SJN meetings and computer labs.
At my request, Aidan sought out SJN members with examples of experiences with Maricopa and Phoenix Workforce Connection in advance of an SJN meeting with them to explore opportunities for SJN members.
He made a valiant effort in trying to convince a retired Lt. Col from another Southeast Valley networking group to drive down to an SJN Southeast event to take digital photos of SJN members for their LinkedIn profiles.
Aidan was an SJN ambassador as he attended other networking groups, and he referred many first-timers to SJN events both in the North and Southeast, and encouraged them to also volunteer.
And he followed up with me multiple times after SJN Southeast meetings when he heard about potential opportunities that might be a fit for an SJN member that he had talked to at a previous meeting, but didn’t quite remember who they were.

On Monday, December 7th, Aidan will be transitioning back into SJN Alumni status as he starts at Honeywell Aerospace, through Manpower, as a Senior Advanced Engineer.

I am very grateful for the volunteer contributions and ongoing support that Aidan has provided to me and to SJN Southeast, we will miss him at our upcoming meetings, and we wish him the best in his new opportunity. afoley1@cox.net

Volunteer of the Week: Jamie Mercado, AMEX

SJN members benefit from the support of our neighbors--individuals and their organizations.

By acknowledging their contributions, we also capture and share our stories.

Jamie Mercado is an employee of American Express Corporation (AMEX). Like many corporations in America, AMEX sponsors an Employee Volunteer Program with a purpose of “faciiltating an active and socially responsible voice for employees in the communities in which they live and work.”

Jamie started volunteering with SJN this spring. When asked how and why she found and chose to volunteer with SJN, Jamie replied, “I found SJN through Google. SJN was the first organization on the list that popped up and I called and spoke to Bill Austin, Chris Vicari and then Raoul Encinas. They were all so helpful and caring! Immediately I felt a connection to their warmth, professionalism, and compassion to help others.”

Jamie brought a team of collegues to SJN, and they were assigned to help with the Mock Interview session on May 26th. “I was hooked on SJN after that and wanted to extend my help.”

For her continued involvement, Jamie participated on a team developing the new curriculum for the Interviewing and Managing Offers module and worked in that effort from May thru August of 2009.

Volunteering Benefits Jamie’s Career
When the curriculum was ready for delivery, Jamie committed to becoming an SJN trainer. “Although I have instructed for about 20 of my 22 years at AMEX, it had always been to internal AMEX employees (both entry level and exempt level) and always pretty small groups of 12-70 at most. Presenting at SJN allowed me to break out of my shell and deliver curriculum to around 180 people, helping to break my fear of speaking in front of large audiences.”

As an acknowledgment of Jamie’s volunteer work, AMEX is planning to make a $500 donation to SJN.

SJN members are grateful to Jamie, her colleagues and American Express Corporation for their contribution to SJN. Perhaps other SJN supporters and alumni members have employee volunteer programs or opportunities for matching grants that could benefit SJN as well. Veterans' Day THANKS

To all our Veterans--SJN members, friends and neighbors:

Thinking of all of you today and thanking you for your service.

My father served in Europe during WW II. At that time, households with veterans actively serving in the war put a red star in their window. My grandparents had four sons all serving overseas, and they proudly displayed four stars in their front window. They were even interviewed in the local newspaper. I am going to see if I can find a copy of that article and share with you.

My brother served in Korea and my husband was in the Army during the Vietnam Era. We hold our military servicemen and women in the highest regard.

I volunteer in the Phoenix helping neighbors in transition, and have met many wonderful service people -- always proud to work with and support their transitions.

Today, my husband went to Home Depot and noticed a promotion for a 10% discount with a veteran's ID. He searched in his wallet and found a 40 year old Army photo ID--hasn't been touched in that many years! And Home Depot honored it. Way to go! I understand various restaurants in the area are offering free meals as well--check it out. I'm not the only one who wants to show love, appreciation and thanks to each of you.

Volunteers of the Week: Karen England-Rick Gould

Karen England and Rick Gould, of Gould Intelligent, an I/T staffing, custom software and website development firm, have been key contributors to the launch and continued success of SJN operations in the West Valley!

As successful recruiters and business leaders, Karen and Rick are passionate about sharing their knowledge and best practices with job seeking members of SJN. Karen and Rick have contributed on the Curriculum Development Innovation Council, helped people individually and as a group by donating their time to resume reviews, sharing "what works and what doesn't" in the Phoenix market, and by presenting core SJN workshops including New Member Orientation, Manage the Emotions of Career Transition and Develop Your Vision, and Interviewing and Managing Offers.

According to Karen, “Rick and I wanted a way to help folks in the community where we work and live. SJN--a great organization that is providing tangible, positive support to people in job transition--provided us with a great avenue in which to do this. SJN allows us to share our skills and experience to help job seekers. Besides, we both love to speak (those of you who have heard us know this!) and you kindly loan us your stage. We believe in SJN and the work Chris and her team are doing and plan to continue supporting SJN operations in the West Valley into 2010. Thanks for letting us be a part of all this.”

SJN and its members thank Karen and Rick for their continued contribution to the success of our organization and our mission to support our neighbors develop their career management skills.

Volunteers of the Week: SJN Marketing Innovation Council

It is a pleasure to recognize the efforts and initiative of the SJN Marketing Innovation Council (IC).

This group of professionals has committed to working on several short-term and long-term projects, including: jump-starting a PR program, updating web content, writing up award applications and re-designing the logo, marketing brochures and signage to reflect SJN’s name change, the renovated curriculum and this year’s expansion. The team continues to develop SJN’s strategic marketing plan.

Comprised of talented individuals with a variety of marketing backgrounds, SJN marketing volunteers are happy to share that several of their members have landed jobs since the Innovation Council formed.

Volunteer of the Week: Al Walsh

Meet Al Walsh, an affable guy who joined SJN as a recruiter-resource in 2007. This year, Al partnered with SJN Board Members to lead the strategic planning to launch SJN in the West Valley.

To support this expansion, Al established a relationship and formed a partnership with the Glendale Community College Director of Career Services. Working with college representatives, he coordinated room availability, equipment and other logistical tasks to execute successful events at the school.

To staff the expansion, Al recruited, trained and managed a team of 25 volunteers to provide support before, during and after events. He cross-trained volunteers to fulfill complex assignments. This ensured consistent delivery and provided for succession planning. He also coordinated with SJN Board members and other event coordinators to maintain consistent processes at all three SJN locations.

SJN is very proud of Al’s contribution—and throughout all our encounters with him he has been professional, upbeat, dedicated and committed to the success of the endeavors he undertakes and the members he serves.

Training Trainers to Deliver SJN Curriculum

Training sessions are planned to teach facilitators the SJN curriculum.

Have you ever wanted to share yourself with others from SJN? Want to lead the crowd? Want to get more experience with speaking in public? If the answer to any of these questions is positive, then plan on attending a Train-the-Trainer session to get the deep understanding to be able to co-lead one of the SJN Modules at one of our three valley-wide locations.

Volunteers of the Week

As my readers know, SOUTHWEST JOB NETWORK (SJN) is an all-volunteer organization. Our volunteers are the best. Read about the contributions of two of them.

KAREN ZELLER offered to photograph SJN members and provide digital images for their profiles, blogs, etc for a $5 fee. Karen conducted the photo shoot this week at Temple Chai where we had our regular meeting. She donated her time and talent and the money she collected to SJN. This worked out very well—as Karen patiently took photos until each subject was satisfied with the results. Karen donated $130 to SJN. Thanks, Karen!

Thanks also go to the team of administrative volunteers who managed the flow of people being photographed, took the money, etc. One volunteer offered his jacket and tie to another member who came unprepared for the shoot, but took advantage of it when there was time for Karen to photograph him. That's the spirit!

The second volunteer I want to recognize is MARYANNA LEVENSON who approached Einstein Bros (where we’ve been purchasing bagels for some time) to see if they would donate the bagels to SJN. She couldn’t get anyone to return her calls.

Maryanna took the further initiative to talk to Chompie’s. While the deal isn’t “signed,” it appears that Chompie’s is willing to consider this donation, and I have just sent the required evidence of our nonprofit status along with a letter explaining what SJN does in the community. Fingers crossed!

These are two examples of members who offered to put energy behind their ideas—and each made a significant impact. THANK YOU Karen and Maryanna.

I ask members to think about KAREN and MARYANNA when you have ideas of things that SJN could do or services SJN could provide. Remembering we operate entirely on donated services. Ask yourself, “Is there something I can do with my time, talent and ideas to make an impact on the organization and my job seeker peers?” I bet you can!

Jim O'Hara is one of the founding partners and President of Kellen James, a National Staffing Consultancy and is recognized as an authority on Human Capital Consulting. Jim is responsible for the strategic direction of the firm and management of significant consulting assignments. Jim has held executive level assignments for both national and international firms encompassing a twenty-five year corporate career. Prior to forming Kellen James, Jim served as Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing for several Divisions of a multi-national information provider serving legal, accounting, information and educational verticals. Jim earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel and his MBA from Pepperdine University.

Lynn Moran has over 30 years of successful business experience, including five years as the President of Ethel M® Chocolates, a boutique retail and wholesale gourmet confectionary company. While President of Ethel M®, Lynn launched a literacy program titled “Feed Your Mind” that provided books to children. In 2002, she was named one of the Most Influential Businesswomen in Southern Nevada. Lynn was also the Executive VP of Sales for Russ Berrie. Lynn opened Sonoran Life Transition and Performance Coaching in 2008 where she focuses primarily on executive and business coaching/consulting. She has a BS degree in Business, a MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University and is a Certified Coach.

Zach Hubbell is Co-Founder of www.pursuethepassion.com, a program of the Jobing Foundation. His work with Pursue the Passion began shortly after college when he and 3 friends set off across the country on a 16,000 mile road trip, interviewing over 200 professionals who loved their work. Currently Zach and Co-Founder Brett Farmiloe have been touring the country speaking to students and adults about their experiences. They promote a weekly video career profile and are developing a book and documentary coming out later this year.

Sara Klug, who calls herself a pre-boomer, is a certified Professional in Human Resources (PHR) with 30 years in HR across numerous industries. As an Education Engineer with OdesseyWare in Chandler, she assists in product evaluation and design and serves as a conduit between the customer community and the software development team. Sara has a BS in Education and MA in Organizational Management. As an educator, Sara taught school in Okinawa and Germany. She also launched a branch office for a California Relocation Management company which became profitable within 15 months. Sara is an advocate of networking, volunteerism, keeping up-to-date skills, and maintaining a positive attitude during transitions, having been through 2 layoffs in 8 years. She is an alumnus of the SJN program and a supporter of SJN since its inception.

Moderator: Raoul Encinas is Vice President at Preod, a professional services firm based in Princeton, NJ. He has 20 years of experience leading large-scale organizational change, turnaround, and strategy initiatives. In this capacity, he directly hired or influenced the hiring of over 100 employees across a variety of job functions and industries. Raoul is a frequent speaker on job search topics, writes the weekly “AskSJN” column, and has directly helped hundreds of job seekers dramatically improve their results.

New Fees for Non-Job Seekers

SJN exists to help job seekers during transition. Our non-profit organization also provides a forum for business supporters to connect with the available talent among our members.

At this stage in our young development, SJN does not have corporate sponsors or other sources of consistent income besides the event donations. Demand for our services has increased significantly in the past year – our current membership is about 1,600 members, more than twice the level at this time last year. This growth has significantly impacted our operating expenses.

In January of 2009, we took some necessary actions to increase income, requesting a voluntary $5 per meeting fee and instituted nominal workshop fees of $10 to $15 for our special training events.

We now need to take additional steps in order to address the increases in our operating expenses and will be instituting fees for non-job seekers attending our meetings or using our table space service. There has been increased interest and attendance at SJN events from business people prospecting for clients and contacts. The SJN Board of Directors has decided to institute a $10 per meeting fee for non-job seekers at our meetings. This change will be effective with our next meeting on March 3.

MEETING SPONSORS
In addition, SJN has been providing table space for businesses to recruit staff. This space is also of interest to businesses interested in promoting their services to members. Therefore, SJN plans to institute a $50 charge to those businesses who set up at the tables in the back of the room and to also provide those businesses a one minute opportunity to promote their business during the meeting.

SJN reserves the right to limit access to table space.

The Techie with the Holey Jeans

At a recent SJN meeting, one of our business supporters noticed a job seeker wearing ripped blue jeans and a loud t-shirt. The businessman commented to me was that this job seeker wasn’t coming across as serious about his search.

I thought about that for a while. I had known this job seeker for a few months and thought he had enough trust in me to hear my comments. The next day, I decided to risk annoying him and wrote under the subject line “constructive criticism.”

I explained to the job seeker that he was sending off the wrong signals with his casual attire . . . which was the opinion of people scouting for talent. I explained that networking events should be thought of as pre-interviews, because you are getting a chance to be noticed.

Fortunately, The Techie with the Holey Jeans responded to my suggestions with appreciation. He acknowledged that he knew my intention was to help him. He also explained that in his industry, jeans and casual clothes were the standard. However, despite his being financially challenged, he was going to Good Will for some decent clothes.

I am so proud of this gentleman for his openness to my unsolicited advice. He actually is stepping it up a notch and removing any doubts in the minds of potential employers--or others who might serve as contacts for him--and I wish him luck. He impressed me with his willigness to hear criticism and adjust his approach.

All I Want for Christmas is a ROOT CANAL?

Well, no, that really wasn’t on my list, but Santa managed to decide that the holidays would be more interesting if I needed immediate dental attention. Fortunately, despite flying cross country (and back), the dreaded procedure was able to be postponed until next Friday.

This situation points to the fact that while we plan good things, often other stuff happens.

Unemployment is part of the stuff of life that hits people the same way—doesn’t happen at a good time and is not welcome when it’s not your choice.

So now what? If part of your year-end news was displacement from steady employment, Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) and the leaders of our group really do understand and want to help.

As a non-profit group run entirely by volunteers who have experienced many career and life transitions, we offer a program of support.

Consider joining us at Temple Chai in Phoenix, our meeting location, on the first and third Tuesday mornings of each month. See the SJN website for more information about our program. The EVENTS CALENDAR offers the meeting schedule and description of presentations planned. The next meeting is Tues, January 6, 2009 – starting 8:30 AM with networking and 9:30 AM with meeting-presentation.

You can expect to be welcomed by caring and friendly people who want to make you part of the group. You’ll be made aware of resources that benefit the job seeker—including resume reviews, a Yahoo Group with information, links, a membership list and prior presentations. Who are the SJN Heroes?

It’s been a year of growth and challenge for Scottsdale Job Network (SJN). We’ve made a lot of great friends, helping many job seekers with resume reviews and job search strategy through our curriculum program. We plan to do more of the same in 2009.

There are many volunteers who are passionate supporters of SJN who offer support to unemployed and under-employed workers in our community. Some of their efforts are in the background--maintaining Yahoo Group, answering phone inquiries, coordinating volunteers, keeping the books, writing the curriculum, maintaining the website—and more! I am often amazed at the support and dedication of these wonderful people.

Do you ever wonder who these unsung heroes are? Many of you have been touched by the volunteer services of our organization.

One of the unsung heroes and most consistent and passionate supporters of our members is Communications Professional, Pat Elliott. Often contributing the latest from the media on job opportunities in the Phoenix area, Pat is tireless in her efforts to help members.

She has taken a lot of her time to support me and the SJN Board with communication strategy, pointing out opportunities for development, alliances and award opportunities.

Pat will not brag, look for a stroke or expect recognition. Other members have told me of her help and encouragement during their transition. She is a professional who aims to see SJN grow and be a resource for the Phoenix area for many years to come. This member-volunteer has been involved with SJN and also the St. Patrick’s Employment Support Ministry for more than five years.

It’s Not the Economy, It’s You

The sun comes up most days in Arizona.

That’s something to look forward to and something to feel good about even though you’re in a job transition, according to local networking guru Dave Sherman, featured speaker at the Scottsdale Job Network meeting on Nov. 25.

Dave gave an inspirational and animated presentation full of both practical tips for job seekers and a message of encouragement. He opened by saying that we shouldn’t let the doom and gloom of economic news get to us – and that we should feel lucky that things aren’t worse. It’s all a matter of attitude and how we adjust our thinking in light of the world around us.

“The first thing you need to do is to stop talking about the bad economy,” says Dave. “The economy is not bad, it’s ‘challenging.’”

When it comes to the economy Dave’s advice is: “Turn off the news, don’t look at the stock reports … watch more sports – it focuses on success.”

Keeping a positive attitude is essential in networking and a job search. And, Dave stresses that it’s critically important to understand there are many things outside your control – like the economy – that are “not your fault” so you shouldn’t be down on yourself but focus on your career path.

“It’s taking the beautiful drive to Flagstaff – it usually takes about 2 ½ hours. But if it snows you may have to put on chains or take a detour so it may take 6 or 7 hours. There’s nothing wrong with the path, you just had to make adjustments,” Dave said.

Finding Common Grounds

Another important point of Dave’s talk centers on what he calls the most important element of networking and a job search – commonality.

“The keys to networking and getting your next job are likeability and commonality. The way people connect is finding something in common – it’s hard to connect when all you talk about is the work you do and what kind of job you’re looking for. Once you create a bond through commonality you can begin to work on the other elements of connection – likeability, trust and dependability.”

Other tips from Dave:

When you are at the point that you feel “What do I do next?” … Do something. Don’t do nothing. Keep moving forward.
Comb the Phoenix Business Journal – especially the Networking Calendar, People on Move section and the Events Calendar. Attend the networking events and meet people.
Don’t let your pride get in the way of networking. If you feel embarrassed about meeting people – get over it.
This time of the year is networking season. The holidays are the perfect time to meet and greet people and talk about more than just looking for work.

What’s in a HERO?

Today, I was declared a HERO by the City of Scottsdale! Honored as a recipient of the annual Frances Young Community Hero Award, my volunteer work at Scottsdale Job Network was brought to public attention with an article and photo in the Tribune, an awards breakfast presentation by the City’s Mayor, and a neat plaque and medallion (yes, like the Olympians wear—but not gold!).

When I started leading an employment support program in Scottsdale in 2002, it was post-911 and seemed a practical way to help my country through a devastating time. I didn’t know I was being called to a life purpose and true test of my commitment to helping others.

Truth be told, it is a JOY and also an HONOR to be allowed into people’s lives when they are hurting, vulnerable and need support, resources and connections to land their next job opportunity.

At a time when our neighbors, communities and country are struggling, I throw out the challenge to find a way to help those around you. Besides the gratification of making a difference, you never know how much your support means to the life and stability of your neighbor. More than ever, the difference you will make is essential.

Community Support for Tough Times

Tough times economically force workers to look for public services to support basic needs. It’s understandable that many of us who never had to ask for help feel embarrassed or humiliated to even consider asking for public assistance. Still, who is more entitled to support than those of us who have contributed to the social programs of our communities—either through our volunteer efforts, direct donations or taxes?

At the invitation of Allen Gjersvig, Executive Director of the Keogh Health Foundation, I was a presenter in a panel of community leaders offering information for the unemployed and under-employed about community resources available to Arizona citizens and legal residents.

Keogh Health Foundation assists AZ’s vulnerable population to secure affordable healthcare during times of personal crises, primarily focusing on disadvantaged women and their children participating in programs to achieve self-sufficiency.

There are other resources where you can do an online assessment to determine eligibility for services:

Arizona 211 Online
Helps you find resources from child care, jobs, health care, and insurance - to State and local emergency bulletins and alerts that are vital in times of disaster or emergency. Arizona 2-1-1 Online was developed in partnership with government, tribal, non-profit and community groups to help you find the resources and information you need.

Arizona Self Help can tell you if you might qualify for programs supporting: food and nutrition, housing and utilities, healthcare, financial benefits and senor and disabled services.

I also met with Stephen Zabilski, Executive Director of St. Vincent de Paul, an organization in service in Phoenix since 1946. Through home visits, shelter, food assistance, employment services, thrift stores and outreach programs, St. Vincent de Paul provides compassion and support to individuals in need, regardless of race, origin, religion or gender. They also provide hot meals regularly and there are no screenings or eligibility requirements to go there to eat. HELP LINE - If you need assistance with utility bills, a food box, or other financial assistance, call Information and Referral at 602-263-8856.

Another thing I learned was the Food Stamps program, sponsored by AZ Community Action Association, is only utilized about 50% of its capacity. Applications are available through www.arizonaselfhelp.org/ Or call the AZ Food Stamp Info Hotline: 1-800-352-8401. The National Food Stamp hotline: 1-800-221-5689.

Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) is a charitable organization of job seekers and others volunteering their time to help them in their career transitions. How to use your business card when networking

A recent comment suggested the need for networkers to understand business card sharing strategy and courtesy. I asked George Fleming, career coach and SJN supporter, to offer his insights on how our business cards fit into those networking conversations.

How to use your business card when networking

The belief is sometimes held, mistakenly, I might add, that the more business cards you give out in your job search, the quicker you’ll land your next job.

Let’s take a step back, and think about why you got business cards for your search in the first place. You got business cards so that people who want to reach you can do so easily. On your card you have your contact information: telephone number and email address. You got tired of writing this information down on scraps of paper and realized that a card is quicker and more professional. Right?

Now you have a box of these cards – what to do with them? Remember what we said above: you got business cards so that people who want to reach you can do so easily. You’re at an SJN meeting. You chat with somebody, and the two of you decide further conversation is warranted.

So you exchange business cards. And you may write a note on the other person’s card about the reason for you following-up. It now is a reminder of a conversation that will take place in the near future.

Sometimes people attend these events and start passing their cards out as though they’re lottery tickets. And you wind up with cards from people you haven’t really talked to. And as you head for the door to leave…you throw those cards in the trash. They’re meaningless to you.

If you do hold on to them, a week later you throw them in the trash – delayed reaction, same result.

Think of your business card as being the punctuation to a networking conversation. “Call me, and let’s arrange to get together.” “Drop me an email, and I’ll give you the contact information for my friend at that company.”

In short, don’t distribute your business cards indiscriminately. People will not have a positive impression of you; your cards will go in the trash; and you’ll not get any positive assistance with your search.

A final note on business card etiquette: If someone gives you their card, promising a networking contact for your search, you are expected to follow up on getting that contact. Don’t wait for the other person to get back to you. The ball is in your court. Go for it.

Peter Polk, Retired Healthcare Executive and Member, Governor’s Task Force on Aging, Mature Worker Initiative, will discuss the actions being taken by the State of Arizona to promote hiring and retaining the mature worker. Peter has served on the State Mature Workforce committee for the past 6 years, and continues his involvement.

Participants will hear about the changing landscape of work, more generations are working side-by-side, competition for talent is escalating, costs of replacing experienced workers, productivity and business results are linked to work environment, benefits of a multi-generational work place. A 15% return on customer purchases will be paid to Scottsdale Job Network -- whether you eat in or take out.

SJN Curriulum Beta Test Successful

Thanks to all who participated at the SJN meetings since February when we launched the SJN Curriculum on the Job Search Process

Reality and Hope

On Tues of this week, Channel 3 TV News came to an SJN meeting and conducted interviews with some of our job seekers, taped Matt Moran's presentation and interviewed me as leader of the group.

This media interest was coordinated through the efforts of SJN VP-Bill Austin. SJN was fortunate to have the exposure for our community service work, and we hope it will bring positive results for our job seekers.

The evening's televised report edited a lot of positive things shared. My comments were condensed to one statement that went something like this:

"We have seen an increase in attendance since January from 70 and to a current attendance of 85-100. "

What was not added was my perspective that I attributed this growth in part to the positive reputation of the group and the impact we are having on individuals and families.

There are industries hard hit by layoffs and that is impacting many people and SJN’s growth. For me, the volunteer work we do at SJN--and at least my personal mission—is to be a resource to workers and ease the burdens on families hard pressed by economic downturn. We “light the path” to re-employment and offer ourselves as a source of hope. This happens whether there are two people in a meeting or 102. . . and yes, we’ve done our presentations with both!

I am proud to know SJN is making an impact in many lives. What better volunteer work would I want to do as a retired worker myself?

I encourage job seekers to look for the opportunities, build your networks, offer to be resources to others—and oh yes, as I told the reporter, go outside your comfort zone to make connections!

We have shortened the workshop title and refer to it as the Passions workshop. The actual title is Exploring Your Passion – and Putting it to Work, the key word being exploring. This isn’t something you get done in a day. From the feedback I have received from previous participants, it raises new questions and gets people to think and look at the next phase of their life in a different way. SJN is sorry to inform you that due to a work-related conflict, workshop facilitator Maria Wojtczak, is unable to deliver the workshop Exploring Your Passion and Putting it to Work on April 29. Unlike SJN's other programs, this workshop is so personal to Maria who developed it and uses her life stories and experiences to deliver the messages, finding a substitute facilitator is not an option.

The good news is that Maria has rescheduled the workshop for Tues, May 27 (9A-4P) at Temple Chai. Enrollees for the 4/29 workshop were contacted directly and offered the option to either roll their payments over to the May 27 workshop or receive a full refund.

Since enrollment was low for the April 29 event, I hope the new date of May 27 offers an opportunity for more of you to attend. Register via Internet by May 26.

New Projector--it's a beauty!

New Projector Purchased

Thanks to the help of SJN member Elizabeth Stoltz, who researched the options and made recommendations to me, SJN has purchased a new projector. We have been relying on the use of the Temple's projector up until now. Our projector should arrive in about a week, and be available for the Passions Workshop (AM) and SJN Mixer-Open House (PM)--both events on 4/29. This purchase was made possible primarily by the donations of our members, unemployed and under-employed workers.

Networking for SJN
This week, I attended two outside net events for SJN, hosted by CDI IT Solutions and LinkedIn Live (at the County Fair). I shared the group's accomplishments--the projector purchase and our work in general. People are amazed at what we do! As they pick up on the pride I take in this organization, they become interested in supporting us.

Oh, if you've never networked with Bill Austin, SJN's Vice President, be sure to make an event he is attending. He is a magnet and so well connected--one of the top people on the LinkedIn network for Phoenix. Bill is outspoken and passionate in promoting SJN and works to help both job seekers and businesses succeed.

Special Announcement: 501(c)(3) Status for SJN

On behalf of the Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) Board of Directors, I'm very pleased to inform you that SJN is now functioning as a non-profit, tax-exempt entity and that donations to SJN are tax deductible. In addition, SJN can now apply for grants, scholarships, awards and other benefits not previously available to us. This is GREAT news for us!

SJN has been a charitable organization from day one, and relies on volunteer support, donated meeting space, community support and small monetary donations to offer services. My vision has always been to operate as a 501(c(3)non-profit corporation to obtain tax advantages for donors and the funding needed to sustain and grow this group. The SJN Board, members and supporters have worked with me to establish the group as a valuable community resource for our neighbors in career transition. We are committed to offering support without requiring membership dues or meeting fees that could place an additional burden on members during a period when they cannot afford that burden.

At the Feb 5, 2008 SJN meeting, we asked members to help us over the last hurdle to apply for 501(c)(3)tax exempt status with the IRS. We also shared our 2008 financial needs and asked meeting participants to help us by increasing their meeting donations to $5. We explained there would be NO GATEKEEPER at the meetings, that is, no one will stop participants at the door requesting money. Voluntary donations are put in a donation basket located at the coffee station. Since that request, donations have increased, and if sustained, we should be able to meet operational needs.

We have postponed some needs since our inception, choosing instead to focus on building services. Last week, thanks to board, member and community donations, Form 1023 applying to the IRS for tax-exempt 501(c)(3)status was completed and mailed, enabling SJN to begin functioning as a tax-exempt, non-profit entity.

We will continue to need volunteer and community support to operate this group, and we anticipate many exciting developments in the years ahead as a result of the 501(c)(3) designation. THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to making this possible and for your support of the Scottsdale Job Network.

Resume Reviews - At each meeting, a representative from the Resume Writers Council of Arizona will be available to critique resumes and offer improvement suggestions from 9-9:30 AM.

Volunteering - Whether you are a current job seeker or you are working and want to help people in job transition, there is a place for you to volunteer. Member participation is essential. It helps establish a stronger support program for those who follow. We encourage members to take part in the operations of the program in whatever way they can. Open Invitation! Anyone interested in the support we provide is welcome. We do not require membership dues or meeting fees to allow everyone who is in job transition to be able to participate. Since our program is unfunded, we suggest that participants make a voluntary donation of $5 per meeting. When we have an all-day workshop, we do need to pass the costs along to participants.

Job seekers who attend their first Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) meeting or workshop are often surprised at the support offered by a community group of volunteer professionals. One participant recently commented, "I wish I found this group months ago!"

This week's meeting on Creating Your Vision and Developing a Personal Marketing Plan was attended by over 80 people--a record for SJN. Participants responded well to the message of speaker Jim O'Hara, President of Kellen James www.kellenjames.com and the SJN Director of Curriculum Development.

Feedback gathered after the session suggested that the SJN Curriclum on the Job Search Process www.scottsdalejobnet.com/sjn-curriculum/ is serving a real need for job seekers in the community.

SJN is open to all in the Greater Phoenix area, and participants join us from as far away as Florence and Surprise. We meet on the first and third Tuesdays, 9 AM - 11:30 AM, at Temple Chai in Phoenix, 4645 E. Marilyn Road, Phoenix, AZ 85032.

Job seekers are invited and encouraged to join us and take advantage of the support offered to boost their job search efforts!

Employers and recruiters are welcome to join us for free access to a variety of highly skilled people who are looking for work and you. Employers and recruiters can tell the room what kind of people they are looking for as well as network with them one on one.

Networking at SJN Meetings

Networking is an important part of what we offer at SJN meetings, and it starts at 9 AM, a half hour before the program starts. This 30 minutes offers a great opportunity to speak with recruiters, employers and other members who are interested in you. Many employed supporters attend from 9 AM, and are not able to stay through the meeting to network after the meeting ends.

Starting 9 AM, it is the time to pick up contacts, job leads, offer help to others, get your resume reviewed and develop relationships with others in the group.

Don't miss the opportunity! Bring a business card, your resume, a smile and a firm handshake and make some great connections starting at 9 AM!

Why does SJN support PV Food Bank?

Recently, one of our members asked me why SJN supports this cause. The reasons are valid. Despite living in an affluent area, we have neighbors who are hungry. Often their situation is exacerbated by unemployment. . . the focus of SJN's community service. Also, PVEFB is a favorite charity of the Temple Chai community which is supporting SJN, and we wanted to align with the Temple's effort.

WHAT IS PVEFB'S MAIN OBJECTIVE?

. . . to provide emergency assistance to individuals living within the boundaries of the Paradise Valley Unified School District. PVEFB distributes food to families that would otherwise go hungry. The emergency provisions provide wholesome, nourishing meals to families in need. They bridge the gap until a long-term solution can be arranged.

HISTORY:

Feeding the hungry in our area had been the responsibility of various religious organizations. An increase in demand prompted the Greater Paradise Valley Community Council to form a subcommittee to study the hunger problem. Using surveys and projections this group concluded that there was a need for a non-governmental community based organization to service the hungry – so the Greater Paradise Valley Community Assistance Team (GPVCAT) was formed in April 1986.

The goals of the organization were to have a permanent storage facility for food, within our service boundaries, which would be available to clients referred by religious and charitable organizations. To facilitate this goal the first efforts were to locate a site and interest a core of volunteers to handle requests and stock food supplies.

Thanks to the encouragement and financial and logistical support of many businesses and religious institutions in our community, office and storage space was made available. A temporary location was established at 4242 E. Greenway Rd. Food drives conducted by area schools and businesses filled the shelves. By early 1987 we were in business.

A search for a permanent site led us to our Shea Plaza location in October 1987. The name GPVCAT was replaced by our business name Paradise Valley Emergency Food Bank. We occupied a space rent-free until 1997 when a change in ownership necessitated our signing a lease agreement. New space was prepared and made available to us at our present location
We are governed by a Board of Directors, meeting four times each year, made up of community business and civic leaders. Our connection to the business, civic and religious community is essential, as we must not only solicit food donations but also monetary contributions to offset our fixed costs.

We should all be proud of our part in the success of the Food Bank. Our motto, "Neighbors Sharing - Neighbors Caring," summarizes our commitment to our community.

I hope you will continue to keep this community need in mind and bring non-perishable food items to the Temple Chai when you attend SJN meetings. Our next is Tues, Feb 5, 9 AM.

Curriculum on the Job Search Process

The Scottsdale Job Network (SJN) Curriculum on the Job Search Process has been designed to provide the training and practice that job-seekers need to be successful. Workshops will be offered at the SJN bi-monthly meetings starting in February 2008. Job seekers can start at the beginning of the curriculum and work their way through the entire process or come to workshops of particular interest.

Human Resources: Friend or Foe?

Many consider the Human Resources (HR) department “roadblocks” or even “evil forces to reckon with" in the job search process. As with any generalization, neither description is accurate.

Whether we like it or not, every company pursuing and eventually hiring talent has a process to follow. This process usually involves several people who assume a role in the hiring process.
The first line, if you will, is typically HR. Why? Most Hiring Authorities have several items on their plate each day and have taken the art of delegation to heart. They do not want to review countless resumes or inquiries, nor do they have the time. The initial screening task is most often relegated to Human Resources, even if you send your resume directly to the Hiring Authority. The bottom line: HR is most often given this task by the person who may eventually be your boss.

Regardless of one's opinion, Human Resources plays an integral role in the organization’s hiring process, and it would behoove any job seeker to establish a strong business relationship with HR. It's also wise to remember that the HR Professional IS a working member of the company you wish to join and a part of the process. Many job seekers find that once a relationship is established, HR professionals can and will give you more insight into the company and, in some cases, to the hiring manager you may eventually meet.

HR has a job to do and should be treated, from an interview perspective, just as you would the actual hiring manager. Although Human Resources typically is not the final decision maker, it can be a strong influencer. Depending on the position level, HR can have a NO vote, meaning your credentials never reach the intended audience.

Treat these people with respect and understand that they are part of a process. Give them the same level of professionalism you would extend to the actual hiring authority. Prepare for your conversation with HR like you would if you were speaking with your future boss. The benefits of developing this relationship far outweigh the myths and personal biases that may exist.
